Pre-Performance Poetry Reflection

Before you perform your poem, please complete the following in the comments section. Each part of the assignment is worth 10 points:

1. Either find a copy of your poem online or type it here on the blog. (Finding a copy is the easy way to do it, but typing it will help you to see how well you have it memorized!) Be sure to also put the title and author.
2. In a paragraph, explain what you think this poem means. Why do you think the author wrote it? What sort of mood or feeling does it give?
3. In another paragraph, explain why you chose this poem. What is it about the poem that speaks to you? (And just so you know, “It was the shortest poem I could find” is not an acceptable response!)

Naming of Parts by Henry Reed
To-day we have naming of parts. Yesterday,
We had daily cleaning. And to-morrow morning,
We shall have what to do after firing. But to-day,
To-day we have naming of parts. Japonica
Glistens like coral in all of the neighboring gardens,
And to-day we have naming of parts.

This is the lower sling swivel. And this
Is the upper sling swivel, whose use you will see,
When you are given your slings. And this is the piling swivel,
Which in your case you have not got. The branches
Hold in the gardens their silent, eloquent gestures,
Which in our case we have not got.

This is the safety-catch, which is always released
With an easy flick of the thumb. And please do not let me
See anyone using his finger. You can do it quite easy
If you have any strength in your thumb. The blossoms
Are fragile and motionless, never letting anyone see
Any of them using their finger.

And this you can see is the bolt. The purpose of this
Is to open the breech, as you see. We can slide it
Rapidly backwards and forwards: we call this
Easing the spring. And rapidly backwards and forwards
The early bees are assaulting and fumbling the flowers:
They call it easing the Spring.

They call it easing the Spring: it is perfectly easy
If you have any strength in your thumb: like the bolt,
And the breech, and the cocking-piece, and the point of balance,
Which in our case we have not got; and the almond-blossom
Silent in all of the gardens and the bees going backwards and forwards,
For to-day we have naming of parts.

I think this poem is talking about the gun. It is explaining the parts of the gun, telling you how to use it. This poem was written in 1914, which was before World War 1. The last 1 or 2 lines ending each stanza tell about something opposite to war, something peaceful, but at the same time they tell about the gun and the soldiers. "Glistens like coral"- the gun glistens, "Silent, eloquent gestures"- move silently, "Fragile and motionless"- fragile to danger and motionless expecting the fight, "Bees are assaulting and fumbling the flowers"- bees are the army attacking the flowers, who are the opposing army. The poet wrote it to tell about using a gun. It is serious.

I really liked this poem after I heard it. It has a mysterious meaning hidden in it, it is so cool the way the poet wrote the descriptions I was explaining. I love the way it flows and the way it is written.

  2. Venus Fly Trap Rap

    Venus Fly,
    yeah that’s my name,
    munching houseflies,
    that’s my game.

    I like moisture
    and full sunlight
    distilled water
    tastes all right.

    But not as tasty
    as a common fly;
    I’ll wait for days
    ‘till one comes by.

    Some call me
    a carnivore;
    in fact I’m and
    insectivore.

    I got green leaves,
    got a little, bitty flower,
    but that’s not where
    I get my power.

    All my traps
    get set with care;
    if a fly comes by
    he’d best beware.

    My fangs clang shut
    like a prision cell,
    and soon that fly
    won’t feel too well.

    My enzymes
    dissolve him slow
    ‘till a few more days
    there ain’t no mo’.

    Venus Fly,
    yeah that’s my name;
    munching houseflies,
    that’s my game.

    By:Ralph Fletcher

What I think this poem means is that, well, I dont really know to tell the truth. I just think Ralph Fletcher just made this poem to be silly, or a second Shel Silverstein or Dr. Seuss. It is telling the story of what happens before and after (and during) eating/catching flies. I don't really think that any poems have some meaning. Some do; when the author tries to "hide" some meaning in the poem, but they are hard to be interpretated. That is what I think.

Why I choose to do this poem is because that when I read it, it made me laugh. I loved the way the author rhymed, and put all of the words together so perfectly. I loved the overall put of the poem being told from the Fly-trap's point of view, was really adorable. What about this poem that "speaks" to me is when the fly-trap talks about what he does. I loved this poem and I would recomend to read the book "A Writing Kind of Day By: Ralph Fletcher" to anyone!

  3. Ten Things To Do When It Rains by: Douglas Florian

    Play Ping-Pong.
    Sing along.
    Read a book.
    Learn to cook.
    Go exploring.
    In a drawing.
    Write a play.
    Talk all day.
    Surf the net.
    Build a jet.
Or go outside and get wet.

I think this poem means that since it rains a lot in the spring, there are some ideas on what to do when it rains.I think this is more of a silly poem then a serious poem because it has a funny mood to it. I think the author was trying to be silly when he said " or go outside and get wet" because a lot of people think its difficult to find something fun to do when it rains and goig outside and getting wet is very fun but not something a lot of people would think to do.

I chose this poem because I thought it was very funny and silly and I really like poems like that. I also chose this poem because I to struggle to find things to do when it rains so I like these good silly ideas. This poem speaks to me because none of the other poems stuck in my head and this one did.

  4. The Frog
    BY HILAIRE BELLOC
Be kind and tender to the Frog,
And do not call him names,
    As ‘Slimy skin,’ or ‘Polly-wog,’
       Or likewise ‘Ugly James,’
    Or ‘Gape-a-grin,’ or ‘Toad-gone-wrong,’
       Or ‘Billy Bandy-knees’:
    The Frog is justly sensitive
       To epithets like these.
    No animal will more repay
       A treatment kind and fair;
At least so lonely people say
Who keep a frog (and, by the way,
    They are extremely rare). .
I think the author might of wrote the poem to tell people that frogs can't control their looks, but they deserve respect. Or maybe the author likes frogs and doesn't like when people make fun of them. The feeling of this poem to me is all life should be given respect, yet the author took a funny and creative view of it. This leads me to feel the mood of the poem is happy. . . I chose this poem because I like frogs, and sometimes other people think thats weird. This poem sort of explains that frogs wouldn't like that that if they could under stand it. I also like how the the author makes it sound like the frog can understand the humans. One of the reasons I chose this poem was that I thought that part was pretty funny. Thomas W.

I think that this poem is very well written and really expresses what the author wants to tell the reader. I think he wrote this because he was making a summer book and this was a very good fit to the book.I think that it gives a uplifting spirt to people so the reader has something to look forward to in the future.

I chose that poem because I cant wait till the summer starts and I finnaly get to golf. Well ive already golfed a lot but ill get to golf in better weather.this poem speaks to me because i love summer and I really needed something to look forward to and this poewm was just the thing

I think that the author wrote this poem because she/he just finished watching The Patriot and she/he was really in that kinda mood and just started blurping out poems.

One of the reasons that I chose this poem is because it some what had to do with the morden military so as you know I like that stuff, another reason that I chose this poem was because of the last verse (its my favroite verse XD, and I look forward to performing it XD XD)(double X-D)

    Clouds Overtook by Susan Schoeffield

Clouds Overtook the clear, blue sky
    and swirled overhead last week.
A menacing grayness appeared up above.
    The threatening forecast was bleak.

Clouds overtook the colors of sun
and filled the air with a chill.
Too heavy to keep all the rain they contained,
they pelted my spirit and will.

Clouds overtook my lightness of heart
and replaced it with colors of sad.
But under the shadows, a beacon appeared
to illuminate all that I had.

White, puffy clouds overtook the gray,
giving way to an unyielding light.
From love that surrounds me and keeps me fulfilled,
the forecast within me is bright.

I think this poem means, even though disappointing things happen in life, you should be happy all the time. I think the author wrote this to make the reader happy and feel good. The mood of the poem is a little sad and disappointing at first, but it's happy at the end.

I chose this poem for some different reasons. One because the title totally stood out to me. It just sounded like a really good poem to me. Two because I really liked the ending, and it just sounded like a poem that I could see myself performing.

    Games

    They're over.

    That's all.

    Lee Bennett Hopkins

This poem to me is about sports. They end and we know it. We don't want it to end but they do. The author wanted to say that at the end of the game there is final score and that is that. This gives me a sad feeling because I never want sports to end. I think some people can agree with that too.

I chose this poem because it has to do with sports. I can relate to it because I know what it feels like when a game ends. I really like this poem because it gives you a lot of emotion. That are what poems are used for. I liked it very much.

    My Little Brother,
    By:Ralph Fletcher

    My teacher says to use
    metaphors and similes
    whenever we write poems.

    My brother Tom swoops in
    like an F5 tornado
    and destroys my bedroom.

    He's a human wrecking ball
    that crashes through my room
    leaving trampled toys behind.

But I'd rather write it like this:
I've got an evil little brother.
And just leave it at that.

This poem means to me that people have little brothers that can be annoying. I think the author wrote this because he might have had a little brother that would mess up his room sometimes. I think it sort of gives off a mean but Happy mood, because it says his brother is evil, but no one is really evil.

I chose this poem because my little brother would mess up my room just like the poem said about it maybe happening tho someone else. But i didn't change the name in the poem to one of my brothers, because there not evil, but do mess up my room sometimes.

When Babe Ruth Hit His Last Home Run

    When Babe Ruth
    Hit his last home run,
It was as if the sun
    Had set
    Upon some huge continent
    Called baseball.
    After all,
    Nothing Ruth did
    Was small.

    60 home runs
    in '27.
    No one had ever done
    That before.

And still, after so many years,
    Deep
    In our sleep,
We want to be like him.
    Run bases like him,
    Be in the movies
    Like him,
    Be larger than life
    Like him.

    O, Babe, come back
    Hit one more
    Homer
For one of your earth's children.

    - Louis Phillips
This poem means that when he hit his last home run that it was so amazing to see him become a legend. They are also saying that he was like a God of baseball. They were also sad to see his last home run ever again.

I think the author wrote this so we could feel what it was like seeing Babe Ruth play baseball and he played the game. This poem gives you great feeling on how he played baseball. The mood is calm it's like when he hits the ball the stadium gets silence.

I chose this poem because sports is something that is a part of me. I always wondered how Babe Ruth played. This poem also spoke to me. I love baseball it says something about me and expresses something about me.

    Art Class by James Galvin
Let us begin with a simple line,
Drawn as a child would draw it,
    To indicate the horizon,

More real than the real horizon,
Which is less than a line,
Which is visible abstraction, a ratio.

The line ravishes the page with implications
    Of White Earth, white sky!

The horizon moves as we move,
    Making us feel central.
But the horizon is an empty shell-

Strange radius whose center is peripheral.
As the horizon draws us on, withdrawing,
    The line draws us in,

    Requiring further lines,
    Engendering curves, verticals, diagonals,
    Urging shades, shapes, figures...

What should we place, in all good faith,
    On the horizon? A stone?
    An empty chair? A submarine?

Take your time. Take it easy.
The horizon will not stop abstracting us.

I think the author wrote this to say that we can make anything out of a simple line you would draw childishly, specifically a horizon. He is saying that this little line symbolizes so much and is showing the possibilities of things we can do with the line. He's trying to boost our creativity from 'Step #1: Draw a line; this will be a horizon!' I don't necessarily think this only implies to artwork. Maybe the object is to write a book, and the horizon symbolizes a character or a plot. Maybe the object is to write a song, and the horizon is the tune or the lyrics.

I chose this because it 'spoke' to me. Mentally, not physically. In my mind I could hear, "YOU LIKE ME! CHOOSE ME!" and I agreed. I don't like poetry a lot, but I like this one because is has to do with inspiring me or another reader. A lot of poems are just, "I hear the wind. It's like a graceful angel. Now it says 'Hello'" This does not inspire me. It makes me think the author needs serious help because he/she hears things that sound like angels in a volunteered state of solitary confinement hosted outdoors. This makes me fall asleep. But the poem I chose is actually interesting.

    Campfire by: Doug Florian

    The campfire burns,
    The marshmallows toast,
And now a story about a ghost,
Who roamed the woods every night,
    A horrible hideous,
    Terrible sight,
    Without a sound,
    And out a view,
    They sneak behind children,
    LOOK one behind you!

    By: Douglas Florian

This poem is kind of like what it is like to have a campfire and explains what you do at a campfire. I would think the authur wrote it because it was probably what he experienced at a campfire as a kid or adult. i mean that is what it is like to me at a campfire. This poem kind of makes you want to have a campfire and tell scary ghost stories and eat smores.

I chose this poem because it is something I like to do in the summer and is really fun because you never know who is behind you. The stories that are told make you turn around because you think something is behind you. This poem speaks to me like I am a big fun part in the summer that I love to do and I would think many other people do too. I espeacially love it when the super scary story is told in a creepy voice that makes everyone want to run away.

There are so many different flavors to find,
it gets harder and harder to make up my mind,
how can I ever decide on which kind?

    there's raspberry ripple,
    marshmallow drip,
    peppermint flagpole,
    apple tooth chip;

    Macaroon pickle,
    chocolate cheese,
    pumpernickle cherry,
    salami freeze;

    blueberry tweed,
    maple nut mink,
    orange ice pizza,
    raisin run fink;

    blackberry tuna,
    tiddledy plum,
    tomato toffee,
    chrysanthemum yum;

    banana blubbler,
    french fried nectarine,
    turtleneck taffy,
    drip-dry tangerine;

    cinnamon spasm,
    pistachio burp,
    cantaloupe clam,
    slime of lime slurp;

    nesselrode yo-yo,
    butterscotch tape,
    frenzy of apricot,
    barefooted grape;

    wheat germ parfait,
    wall-to-walnut sludge,
    and the special today
    is frankfurter fudge.

    -Eve Merriam

I don't really think this poem has a meaning to it, except wierd ice cream flavors. I also don't understand why the author wrote it. It dosen't really have feelings in it. She is an author that writes thousands of crazy poems. I think this poem has a very happy mood.

When you told us that we were going to have to memorize a poem, you said to do one that we really liked. I can see my reflection in it. Fun and creative like me. Thats what speaks to me. How it is like me, but in poem form and it's on a paper!

Sorry, I think I messed up on my other comment.

    The Road Not Taken

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
    To where it bent in the undergrowth;

Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim
Because it was grassy and wanted wear,
Though as for that the passing there
Had worn them really about the same,

And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I marked the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way
I doubted if I should ever come back.

I shall be telling this with a sigh
    Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I,
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.

    Robert Frost

I think that this poem has two meanings. One is a guy is walking down a path in the woods and comes to a fork in the road. He stands there for a while and thinks about which path to go down. In the end, he goes down the path that is less traveled, but he wonders what would've happened if he went down the other path.

The other meaning is that there's a guy and he's lived his life bt then he has to make a big decision. He has two choices, one is a path the "everyone" has taken. His other choice is a path that is "less traveled by" and where he gets to make his life his own. HE ends up choosing the path that is less traveled by. This poem has a thoughtful mood to it and it really gets you into a mood where is you have to write something about it you can write something that turns out to be really long. I think the writer wrote it to show that if you have to make a decision in life, don't make your desision right away, give it some thought and then make your decision.

I chose this poem because I really liked how it has one meaning that is pretty obvious when you first read it, but when you read it again you realize that it's actually a poem about life and its choices

    I put my nickel
in the raffle of the night
somehow that raffle didnt turn out right

    I lost my nickel
    I lost my time
I got back home without a dime

    when I dropped that nickel
    in the subway slot
I wouldn't have done it knowing what I got

I could as well've just stayed
    at home inside
    my bread wasn't
    buttered on neither side

    by Langston Hughes

I think this poem is saying that he wished he didn't drop that nickel in the raffle of the night and that he lost his money because he did. I think " my bread wasn't buttered on neither side." means that everything he did, didn't turn out like he wanted it to.

I choose this poem because I like Langston Hughes and how he kinda writes his poems with kinda of a accent. I also like how is isn't always totally serious but a lot of his poems have good meanings to them.

This poem is about picking apples in the fall. Douglas Florian made it sound like a story being told in a very fluent and poetic way. When he says, "(Leave the rest)." I think he means that you should save everything for other people. Douglas definitely thought about this poem.

When I first read this poem i knew right away that it was a great poem. My favorite thing to do is go pumpkin and apple picking in the fall. I look forward to reading this in front of the class. It is a very fluent poem and fun to read.

  21. Crossing late is best,
    the bridge strung
    over the water
    like a huge harp.
    Sun caught
    in the black strings
    forms one pure note-
    trembling,
    falling as we rise,
    reach out,
    Strain to hear
    the perfect sound
    that must be fading
    just above our heads
    River Song:by Warren Woessner

I think this poem means that things that you see in everyday life can mean more than just what you see. Such as the detail put into the poem to show a new way of thinking. I think the author wrote this to tell us about a new revolution of structures that are all around us. Also to put enjoyment into different kinds of poetry that he has written or that others have written. This poem gives me a smooth and good felling. Because you feel like your crossing the bridge seeing the smooth surface of the water, the trembling of the bridge, and the wonder if your going to make me across, made me feel better and different about poetry.

I chose this poem because as soon as I read it I felt connected with its sayings and expressions. Its speaks to me about things that you should notice and enjoy. Things you shouldnt take for granite. Cause you never know how long you may live.

    Rules
    By:Karla Kuskin

Do not jump on ancient uncles.
Do not yell at average mice.
Do not wear a broom to breakfast.
    Do ask a snake's advice.
Do not bathe in chocolate pudding.
Do not talk to bearded bears.
Do not smoke cigars on sofas.
Do not dance on velvet chairs.
Do not take a Whale to visit
    Russell's mother's cousin's yacht.
And whatever else you do do
    It is better You
    Do not.

I think this poem means rules in a common house hold but with twist on all of them with some odd way. I think the author wrote this poem because she might have read a book and thought of a crazy idea to write this poem. The mood of this poem is to have a good time reading it and have a silly time, but also it is kind of a serious poem too. It also makes me laugh when I read it.

I chose this poem because it seamed really funny, and it was a twisted poem not like a boring poem. This poem speaks to me because it is a kids life of rules. It also speaks to me because the book that I choose has one of my favorite authors that wrote it and he is Shel Silverstien, and it had a dog doing homework on the cover.

  23. The Cow
    by:Kate Miller
    Because
    she wears
    a bristly map
    of milkweed white
    and midnight black

    it seems
    as though
    she's
    strong enough
    to carry continents
    upon her back

    with oceans
    in between

    and islands on her
    knees

I think this poem means that the pattern of splotches on a cow are almost like the silhouettes of the countries on a map. I think this poem is very simple and not very flashy, like some of the other poems I read before choosing this one. The mood of this poem is very calm and quiet. I think the author wrote this poem because she wanted to add a simple piece into all the loud, rambunctious city of poems out there.

I chose this poem because it did not seem to have any hidden secrets to be revealed or anything. It was very straight forward and did not have fancy words or zany phrases that you can laugh or joke about. I like simple things, but to me, simple things can be fancy in other ways.

    Adventurers by Amy Shmidt

    Rowing
    Flowing
    Downstream by boat
    then we spy something
    small, green, and afloat

    Steering
    Nearing
    Peering. A ball!
    loud water crashing
    lookout!
    waterfall

What i think the peom means is that there are two dogs and they are on a boat, and they see something green and they see that it is a tennis ball. But they get destracted and they dont relize that there is a waterfall. Then they finally see the water fall and they just freak out. I think the author wrote it beacause she like dogs (or animals).I think the move or feeling that it gives is shocking or surprising, because they dont see the water fall but when they relize that there is w=one they are shocked or scared.

I chose this poem because i labsolutely love animals. The peom has a good feelig to it.The peom is actually a nice peom. Also interseting. Since im not a big fan of peotry i wasnt really interested in doing this but once i read the book and that one particular poem i fell in love in love with it because that one peom just caught my eyes. The pictures in the book were so adorable.

  25. I Found a Four Leaf Clover
    By:Jack Prelutsky

    I found a four-leaf clover
and was happy with my find,
but with time to think it over,
    I've entirely changed my mind.
I concealed it in my pocket,
    safe inside a paper pad,
soon, much swifter than a rocket,
my good fortune turned to bad.

I smashed my fingers in a door,
    I dropped a dozen eggs,
I slipped and tumbled to the floor,
a dog nipped both my legs,
my ring slid down the bathtub drain,
my pen leaked on my shirt,
I barked my shin, I missed my train,
    I sat on my dessert.

    I broke my brand-new glasses,
and I couldn’t find my keys,
    I stepped in spilled molasses,
and was stung by angry bees.
When the kitten ripped the curtain,
and the toast burst into flame,
    I was absolutely certain
that the clover was to blame.

    I buried it discreetly
in the middle of a field,
now my luck has changed completely,
and my wounds have almost healed.
    If I ever find another,
I will simply let it be,
or I’ll give it to my brother—
he deserves it more than me.

I think the poem means that 4-leaf clovers aren't really lucky, but just an old wives tale. Plus at the ending where it says "I'll give it to my brother he deserves it more than me." I think it means that the man's brother treated him as a pile of dog food and he wants to get even. I think something close to this probably happened to the author except the bad luck some of it might of happened but not all, and for the mood I was thinking first happy then stressed and then calm.

I chose this poem because it might be like my little sister, last year she found 2 4-leaf clovers and no luck came and (not so)bad things happened and she might have thought that it was my fault so she might give me her "unlucky" clovers, but that was last year and my sister is smarter than to give me 2 "unlucky" clovers to see if I like hurting myself. That and it's over 30 lines which is extra credit which is what I need for the time being so yay. Plus we get to do it again if we want to raise our grades so if I make a couple mistakes and get a C or something I can fix it on my second try.

  26. Jessica B. Wonder Where This Horseshoe Went by Edna St. Vincent Millay
    Wonder where this horseshoe went
Up and down, up and down
    Up and past the monument
    Maybe into town

    Wait a minute. "Horseshoe,
    How far have you been?"
    Say it's been to Salem
    And halfway to Lynn

Wonder who was in the team
    Wonder what they saw
Wonder if they passed the bridge
    Bridge with a draw

Says it went from one bridge
    Straight upon another
Says it took a little girl
    Driving with her mother

I think the poem means that even though you may not know the answer, it's okay to wonder. Millay must have wanted to visited many cities where her friends have gone, she must be wondering what it's like to go there. So, she let her feeings show through poetry. I understand her longing to see new places because our family isn't big on travel, so we don't go anywhere very much.

I chose this poem because it's vry innocent and light hearted. I'm not one for dramatic and sad poems, so I knew this was the poem for me. I also like the imaginary image it puts in my head. It's a happy and sunny and makes me feel really good inside.

To The Zoo by Lee Bennett Hopkins
    I'm going to the zoo
    with you
    with you.

I'll try to stalk a lion
    and ride a kangaroo.

Then I'll climb a tall giraffe
    and laugh
    And laugh and laugh
    and LAUGH!

When I've had enough of zoo
I'll leave it and go home
    with you
    with you
    with you.
I think the poet just wanted people to know that he likes the zoo. I think he wanted people to know that going to the zoo could be an adventure. He is talking about stuff he wants to do at the zoo but he can't because he isn't allowed to play with the animals and stuff. I also think he wanted to emphasize some of the stuff he was doing by repition. Like how he said "laugh" and "with you" a couple of times.

I chose this poem because I really like animals and I think the zoo is interesting. I also chose it because when I was reading the book I found the poem in, I liked the illustrations because they were monkeys and bananas. They were really colorful and they sort of made the poem stand out. I don't really like the repeating but I like the rest of the poem so I'm okay with it.

  28. Learning To Swim by Amy Shmidt

    It was sad but true
    I hadn't a clue
I was to afraid to swim
    My poor tail would shake
    My body would quake
    My chances to learn
    looked slim
I missed out on all the fun
    sweating in the
    sun

    I sat poolside and grim
    Enough was enough
    I had to get tough
    I needed help to begin
    I took a swim class
    which was easy to pass
    and now
    I just jump right in
I think that the poet wanted people to know that if you put your mind to something, you can do it. It may take a lot of practice, but eventually it will all be worth it. Also, if a dog can do it, you can do it.

I chose this poem because I thought it was really funny. It's one of those poems where the author doesn't really want you to try and find out what it means, she just wants you to enjoy it! Also, because dogs are one of my favorite animals!

It's a Wonderful World, But They Made a Few Mistakes, By Judith Viorst

It's a Wonderful World, But They Made a Few Mistakes.
Like leaving out unicorns and putting in snakes.
Like no magic carpets, no wishing wells, no genies.
Like good guys getting picked on by the meanies.
    Like arithmetic, especially multiplication.
Like expecting a person to stay at home for one whole week with a
sitter while that person's mother and father take a vacation.
Like needing to finish green beans to get to dessert.
Like everyone caring way to much about dirt.
Like letting there be a cavity in a tooth.
Like calling it a lie when all that this person has done is not
    mention part of the truth.
Like raining on soccer games, and liver for supper.
Like bunk beds where the younger person always gets stuck with the
lower and the older person always gets the upper.
Like leaving out mermaids and putting in splinters, and bee stings,
and wars and tornadoes and stomach aches.

It's a Wonderful World, But They Made a Few Mistakes

I think that the author wrote this to say that not everything is perfect but the world is still a wonderful place to live. I think that the mood is happy, because despite all of the bad things in the world, it is saying that the world is still awesome.
I also think it is saying that everyone makes mistakes but that it's okay.

I chose this poem because when I was reading a poem book, after I had passed this poem, it kept popping up in my head and I had already memorized three lines of it. It speaks to me because it is catchy and I agree with more than half of it. I don't agree with people caring way to much about dirt, I don't know what that means.

  31. Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening by Robert Frost

Whose woods these are I think I know
    His house is in the village, though;
He will not see me stopping here
To watch his woods fill up with snow.

My little horse must think it queer
To stop without a farmhouse near
Between the woods and frozen lake
The darkest evening of the year.

He gives his harness bells a shake
To ask if there is some mistake.
The only other sound's the sweep
Of easy wind and downy flake.

The woods are lovely, dark and deep,
But I have promises to keep,
And miles to go before I sleep,
And miles to go before I sleep.

I think this poem is about nature. I think the mood is peaceful because its just a man and his horse in the woods while its snowing. The man is far away from home.

I chose this poem because Robert Frost is my favorite poet. This poem reminds me of a place up north that i have been to. I don't know why he repeats the last line, maybe he really wants to make a point.

  33. Humpty Dumpty
    Humpty Dumpty
hid himself
underneath a chicken:
    "I'm far from a wall
so how can I fall?
I'll never again be stricken
    by sad misfortune,
or bad luck;
if I fall from this nest
I'll get right back up. . ."
But then something inside of him started to stir -
he had no idea
what was bound to occur
with that chicken on top of him
    though he knew something odd
was tapping about
right under his fragile skin.
    He had no idea,
not the faintest idea,
of the danger
he was now in.
    And before the poor fellow
could figure it out,
before he could reason,
or voice a doubt,
a crack appeared in his neck -
and he broke apart from within.

I think this poem means that just because something seems alot better than what you have now doesnt mean it is. I most definetly think the author wrote it to be funny, not to really prove a point. This poem about half way through gives off that oh gosh something is going to happen mood or vibe.
I chose this because I thought it was hilarious. What spoke to me was the fact that he rantting on and on about how safe his new scenery is but eally it is a whole other danger in it's self.

Softly whitely down the snow mounds and sifts in dunes in drifts and fields of clover covering December over.

I think this poem means that it is snowing really hard. It's snowing hard enough to cover the whole month of December. I think the author wrote this because he wanted to explain what he was feeling. I think this gives sort of a sad vibe because who likes a ton, and I mean a ton, of snow?

I chose this poem because I sort of like snow, but not a lot. I think I am sort of like the author. I would have written a poem that makes me sad, too. This is because I don't like poetry, and I would write about what I was thinking at the time.

There's A Monster In My Mirror by Eve Merriam

There's a monster in my mirror,
    With two beady yellow eyes.
Since I first awoke this morning,
It's been there to my surprise.

It's as wrinkled as a rhino.
It's as hairy as a hound.
And from deep within its belly
    Comes a moaning,groaning sound.

Its long teeth are sharp and pointed,
Its fat tongue is shaded blue,
And its mouth is drooling liquid
    That resembles airplane glue.

There's a monster in my mirror,
With green horns upon its head.
Tell that monster in my mirror
That I'm going back to bed!

I think the author wrote the poem about being tired. In the poem, this person is looking in the mirror and is seeing themselves as a monster person because they have bed head. They are too tired to wake up so they might be imagining them looking like a monster.

I chose this poem because I think I do that too. I always wake up in the morning and I have bed head. I can relate to this poem because I usually have look like a monster in the morning. I also think it was smart to write this poem because it says what we all think in the morning when we look at the mirror.

"How dare you she responded, you must leave us there's the door"

But the creature didn't listen but described an arabesque
As it gobbled all her pencils 7 notebooks and her desk
    Teacher stated very calmly
"Sir you simply cannot stay, I"ll report you to the principal, unless you go away."

But the thing continued eating it ate paper swallowed ink
As it gobbled up our homework I believe I saw it wink
    Teacher finally lost her temper
"OUT!" she shouted at the creature
    The creature hopped beside her.....Glopp
    It gobbled up the teacher

I think the poem doesn't have a specific meaning. I think it is just a fun poem for kids. I think it could mean that a kid is having a dream in school that his or her teacher is being eaten.

I chose this poem because when I first read it I really liked it. I also like this poem because it's very catchy. My favorite types of poems are the poems that rhyme, and this one rhymes.

  49. I couldn't find the poem but the title and author is Schools out by J.Patrick Lewis! i think the author wrote this poem because he probably felt the same way when school was out for him and i think he was sad and happy that school was out! I chose this poem because it was funny and it speaks to me because i feel the same thing on the last day of school. He makes getting out of school really fun!! -Rachel malinowski

  50. A 6th grader sees the Future, by J. Patrick Lewis
In a billion years a.d. the sun will shine for none to see, the sea will miss each passing ship, and the sky will hover over zip! Those blazing stars will start to cool,And I won’t have to go to school. In a billion years from now, or maybe more, but anyhow the earth may shrivel up and die. The universe, Pi in the sky! The future, spinning, may have spun. And I might have my homework done.

I think the author wrote this poem because he might have thought this when he was in 6th grade, or he thinks this is a hidden poem. I think this means that he likes 6th grade because he wrote a poem about 6th grade but no other grade. I also think that this is funny because it's talking about a billion years and we won't be alive.

I chose this poem because it's about 6th graders. I also chose this because it seems funny. I like J. Patrick Lewis and I could't figure out which poem to do the one about summer or this one.

  51. The Hard Way
    by Arden Davidson

    I've got a rabbit's foot
    and a four leaf clover.
    A lucky penny
    and a troll named Dover.

    I've crossed my fingers,
    I've wished on stars.
    And for extra
    safe measures,
    I've wished on Mars.

    I've avoided all ladders
    and black cats as well.
    Even went to a witch
    for a fifty cent spell.

    Now I'm armed
    and I'm ready
    to do my best.
    Next time I'll just study
    for my history test.

I thought the author wrote this poem to be funny. He was showing kids being kids. It might remind him of him when he was in 6th grade, he didn't want to study for his history test. I might have done it the hard way.

I chose this poem because the poet seems like me. I have never of Adern Davidson. He seems like a funny guy. This was a great poem to fit me! --Noah Hauswirth--

  52. Yellow Butter by Mary Ann Hoberman
Yellow Butter purple jelly red jam black bread
    spread it thick
    say it quick
Yellow Butter purple jelly red jam black bread
    spread it thicker
    say it quicker
Yellow Butter purple jelly red jam black bread
    now repeat it
    while you eat it
Yellow Butter purple jelly red jam black bread
    don't talk
    with your mouth full!

I think that this poem is about food. I think that the author wrote this poem because she was hungry. This poem makes me hungry.

I chose this poem because i like the word choice. For some reason food in poems appeal to me. Also I like the rythm of this poem.

  54. I LOST MY HIPPOPOTAMUS by: Jack Prelutsky
    i lost my hippopotamus
    the situations weird
one minute she was next to me
    then POOF she disappeared
    i'm sensing somethings fishy
    an unsavory subterfuge

I've searched and searched with no success
I've yet to find a clue
    to her status or location
i'm unsure of what to do
    if you spot a hippopotamus
    where usually there's none
tell me now - the odds are good
    you've found my missing one

this poem is really cool because it is complete nonsense! i love it. there is no other poem like it. I love how the author thought of a poem like this.

i chose this poem because of .... everything. i noticed it from the title and fell in love with the story. I am very glad i chose this poem, i wouldn't replace it in a lifetime.

the sidewalk isn't just for walking
    its good for talking
    and for chalking
    also running
    while your sunning
    I like biking
    sidewalk hiking
    cool for scooting
    roller skating
    and for super celebrating

    by douglas florian

I think this poem is about summer and the sidewalk. I think the author douglas florian was trying to explain all the things you can do on the sidewalk. i think it is all of the things you can do on the sidewalk in the summer.
I really like douglas florian and his book summersaults.

I picked this poem because it caught my eye. I thought of it when i thought these are all of the things I do on the sidewalk in the summer. I also picked because I love summer and I love everything about it. That is one of the reasons I really liked douglas florins book summersaults.

    Squished Squirrel by: Ralph Fletcher

I wanted to write a poem about a squished
squirrel I saw on the road near my house last week

You can’t write a poem about a squished squirrel my teacher said to me
I mean you just can’t do it

Pick a sunrise or an eagle or a dolphin he suggested
Pick something noble to lift the human spirit

I tried I really did but I kept coming back to that squirrel
Did his wife send him out to fetch some food or something

There was blood and guts but here’s what really got me
He had pretty dark eyes that glistened still

I wanted to write about a squished squirrel
You can’t write about a squished squirrel my teacher insisted but I don’t think that’s true

This poem means that you should have the freedom to write what you want to write. The teacher wanted the kids to write about something creative, the boy thought his was creative, but the teacher still rejected it. I think the author wrote this poem to show that you need to stand up for what you believe in. Just because someone says no the first time keep trying.

I chose this poem because it reminded me of what I saw 3 weeks ago. I saw a squished squirrel on the road near my house. It was very sad but, that isn’t the only reason why I selected this poem. I selected this poem because I thought standing up for his idea was great. He should write about what he likes, he doesn’t have to pick something the teacher likes he can pick his own idea, that he thought of spent time on and that is important to him.

    The Road Not Taken

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
    To where it bent in the undergrowth;

Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim
Because it was grassy and wanted wear,
Though as for that the passing there
Had worn them really about the same,

And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I marked the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way
I doubted if I should ever come back.

I shall be telling this with a sigh
    Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I,
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.
    Robert Frost

This poem means that Robert Frost is taking the road that most people don't go on. He wants to be different. Most people go down the worn down one and since so many people go down it they think that's the good one to take.

I picked this poem because it is so creative. If i were him I would take the one most people go down too. Even tough it doesn't rhyme it is still a great poem!

    I like to walk
and here the black crows talk.

    I like lie
    and watch crows sail by

    I like the crow
that wants the wind to blow

    I like the one
that thinks the wind is fun

    I like to see
    crows spilling from a tree

    and try to find
    the top crow left behind

    i like to hear
the caws that spring is near

    I like the great
    wild clammer of crow hate

    three farms aways
when owls are out by day

    I like slow
    tired howard fling crow

I like the sight of crows for my good night

i think this poems means that the person who is telling the poem likes crows and other people and animals don't

i chose this poem because I like animal poems especally dog poems
