In the comments section tell us in two concise paragraphs about your reading experiences over break. Here are some questions to consider:
- Did you read a really great book you couldn’t put down? If so, share with us!
- Did you struggle with certain books? Getting reading done at all?
- Any cool reading-related gifts?
- Did you try a new reading experience for the first time? (Listening to an audiobook? Reading an e-book? )
- How far did you progress in your twenty book goal? (or just how many books did you read in general?)
This assignment will be worth 30 points. Twenty points for your two paragraphs and ten points for adding to the discussion by mentioning something from another classmate’s post (and it should be more than just, “Hey _____, that sounds really cool!”)
What did I read over break? Well I'm glad you asked!
I know a lot of you will be jealous to hear that I am currently reading the ARC of The Hero's Guide to Storming the Castle, the sequel to The Hero's Guide to Saving Your Kingdom. It is just as funny as the first book, and since I listened to the audio of the first book, I keep hearing Bronson Pinchot's voices for all the characters in my head as I'm reading. It's a pretty awesome experience actually.
I finished an incredibly spooky audiobook called The Diviners by Libba Bray. For those of you who like Mary Downing Hahn and want to move into a more young adult book, The Diviners would be a great choice, though it's 578 pages so it is quite a time commitment. But it is so good! It takes place in 1920s New York, during the Prohibition and Flapper era and the main character, Evie, has special powers that she's trying to use to help stop a serial killer.
I also finished reading a book called You Tell Your Dog First by Alison Pace. It's a series of personal essays about why dogs have been so important in her life and writing career. I loved everything about it because it was funny, endearing, and helped me find a kindred spirit in knowing there are other people out there just as crazy about her dogs as I am. :)
I read a ton more books but I'll leave you with that. I could actually write like ten more paragraphs about the books I read but I doubt you'd read it all. I'm just happy that two weeks of no grading or lesson planning got me out of my reading funk. I was having a really hard time finishing books for quite a while and my lazy days of doing nothing helped me get quite a bit accomplished. My final book tally for 2012 was 93 books. Granted, those are novel-length books and when you take picture books into account I read over 300.
over break I read the false prince book and thought it was really good. I am going to read the next book in the series because I really liked this one.
ReplyDeleteFor Christmas I got a really weird book 100 things you didn't know about insects, and I got a star wars paper airplane book.
Nicolas Stoller
Dear Nic,
DeleteI might want to Read the False Prince because I want to change books and that sounds pretty good. So does that Insect book. I am a big fan of Bugs so I will probably have to borrow that from you. I like Fantasy and The False Prince sounds like a Fantasy. Paper airplanes are cool so I want to look at a few diagrams.
Your Classmate,
Tommy
Paper airplane book? Sweet! StevieM101
DeleteOver break I finished the book Where the Mountain Meets the Moon by Grace Lin. I think is on of the best book I have read in a long time. I plan on reading some of the other books she has written and i definetely recommend it.

DeleteIt sounds like a cool book , the title is cool too.
Delete-Elizabeth Z.
Wow! That book sounds really good! I hope i get the chance to read it!
Delete- Katherine G.
I feel like I should tell you about the book itself. The book is full of Chinese Traditional legends. Some of them are true and some the author made up. (I read the authors note!!!!) Therefore I think it takes place in china or somewhere around there. The book doesn't tell you. The one good thing about this book is that you make inferences at first about things that happened in the book and then at the end everything comes together like a puzzle. The little girl Minli is really poor. So one of the Chinese stories that her dad told her about is about the old man of the moon. who lives on the top of the never ending mountain. He reads fortunes and makes wishes come true. So Minli sets out on a quest to find the old man of the moon. But how will she get to the top of a never ending mountain? Does this man even exist? Minli meets a lot of awesome people along the way. To mention a few: Drtagon, Da Fu, A fu, WU Kang, The Buffalo Boy, The Buffalo Boy, The Buffalo Boys Friend and many more!!!!!!!!!!!!
Deletethe book is available on KIndle or at the St. Paul Library.

ReplyDeleteReally?
DeleteThe books I read over break were This Dark Endeavor by Kenneth Oppel and half of the classic Treasure Island by Robert Lousis Stevenson. This Dark Endeavor was an awesome book about the life of Victor Frankenstein (Dr. Frankenstein) and his twin brother Konrad. It was very good and I loved it because it was about why he made the monster, and what his life was like before hand. I would recommend this book to every one and i want to say it is also a little scary, like when Victor and Elizabeth (Victor's cousin) have to battle a Lynx (big cat) and battle rogue Eagles. This is now one of my favorite books. Tommmy S
ReplyDeleteDark Endeavor sounds good... StevieM101
Deletethis break I read the adoration of Jenna Fox.I loved read this book because it was so different than anything that i have read. This book was science fiction,i don't usually read science fiction because they don't really interest me.I also read the girl who could fly so now I'm done with science fiction.
ReplyDeletewho is that? (didnt put name)
DeleteMickey k Over this break, I read Trust No One, which is in the fifth book in the Cahills vs. Vespers series. I also re-read Catching Fire. I received Mr. Novak's book, and started reading it. I bought The Fellowship of the Ring and started reading that.
ReplyDeleteI got Mr. Novak's book over break but i didn't get the chance to start it. My older sister read a couple chapters of the book and she said it was good. I heard Trust No One was a good book. Fellowship of the Ring also sounds good.
DeleteJacob A.
Trust no one is a sweet book. Stevie M
DeleteI have also received Mr Novaks book. But I haven't had a chance to read it. Jimmmy R
DeleteDuring this break, i read a couple small books, (which = into 2 normal size books) i read a fasinating book i bought from sea world when i was little and had only looked through the pictures. When i read it, instead of stuff that advertises sea world, it was acual facts about sea creatures.
ReplyDeletei also continued to read the book: if your reading this it's to late. So far it is AMAZING! It is the second book in the series.
For Christmas, i asked for Wait Till Helen Comes. Instead, i got the book: The book of random things; And i dont consider that a book really. It's sort of a thing where you say: Hey. Looks like it's a.... uh... THINGY!" On the bright side, I GOT A NOOK FROM MY DAD! (and to avoid questions, yes, it was my real dad) :) happy holidays (not anymore) -Vicky S.
Wait Till Helen Comes is good book, perchance? StevieM101
DeleteHey Vicky that book wait till Helen comes that book sounds really good do you no who has the book now because I really wanted to read that book .how many page is it.
DeleteAGATALUBANSKI IS THe second one
DeleteI want to read the "The Name of This Book is Secret" series would you reccomend it for me?? (tell me at school)
Delete-Max R. 6th grade
Over this break, I read the book Penny From Heaven. Penny From Heaven was very good, the book was about a 12 year old girl, her father died when she was very young so she now Penny lives with her mother and her grandparents. Penny often wonders about heaven and her her own death. I would also like to read Boston Jane series, by Jennifer L. Holm. Bridget E
ReplyDeleteBridget,
DeleteI think I've heard of the author Jennifer L. Holm. Seems familiar. What are some other books she has written? If you highly recommend the book Penny from Heaven, maybe I'll consider reading the book. I'll definitely read it if it's a genre I like. I'll also think about reading the Boston Jane series over our next break.
Isabelle A.
Jacob A. Over break, I started to read ZOOBREAK by GORDON KORMAN which is the second book in the series gefore SWINDLE by GORDON KORMAN.I also started to read the first book of the Hunger Games series by Suzzane Collins. They both where good books. I also started to read the second book of Middle School by Janes Patterson.
ReplyDeleteJacob A. sorry it in James Patterson and not gefore before.
DeleteSwindle and Zoobreak= good books! StevieM101
DeletePatrick Egan
DeleteWhat was the first book in the series by James Patterson
I have not read Zoobreak, but I am reading the second Middle School book, and I think it's a great book. Middle School get me out of here, is very enjoying to read, and I hope you really enjoy it to. I've also read the Hunger Games, and thought it was a very good book, and it had a very interesting story plot. I'm happy that I read those books and hope you liked them too. Connor H.
DeleteDuring Christmas Vacation, I read Diary of a Wimpy Kid; The Third Wheel,(Again), The Mark of Athena, (Again), and a ton of Garfield comic books. I didn't fell that "productive reading vibe" during break. Plus, I was playing video games and playing basement basketball with my cousin Matt Godar who=awesome dude. He also gave me a book.
ReplyDeleteIf anybody has any good book suggestions, tell me. Big Nate Flips Out isn't out for my Kindle yet, and I'm going to have to resort to reading American Girl books!! HELP!!! WANTED!!! Although I did get the Middle School books for Kindle. And also: NOTRE DAME or ALABAMA?!! StevieM101
Patrick Egan-
DeleteWhy don't you try the Potter Wookiee books. My brother read them and they are on my to-read-list. He says that they are funny.
Christian Egan-
DeleteCongratulations on the Kindle. I read The Third Wheel, I liked it, but I think some of the other Diary of a Wimpy Kid books are better. And, by the way, GO NOTRE DAME!
Over Christmas vacation, I read My life as a book, by Janet Tashjian, and Middle School get me out of here, by James Patterson. My life as a Book is different than the usual books I read, it is realistic fiction and mystery, and was not one of my favorite books I've read. They came out with a second My life as a book, but I'm not going to read it because of me not liking the first one, but even though I don't like the first My life as a Book I will still finish it. Middle School get me out of here is a great book and I loved it. I even thought it was better than the first Middle School book. Middle School get me out of here is the second book in it's series, and I would definitely recommend it to someone. Connor H.
ReplyDeleteThe second "My Life as a Book" book is "My Life as a Stuntman" or something. StevieM101
DeleteWhile on Christmas vacation, I read Steve Jobs: Thinking differently. It is a Biography. It was a good book but kind of boring at some moments.
ReplyDelete- Elizabeth Z.
Steve Jobs? Like, Apple's Steve Jobs? Does it say how he made the Iphone5? StevieM101
DeleteIzzy A.
ReplyDeleteOver break,
I finished Helen Keller the photographic story of a life by Leslie Garrett, read Diary of a Wimpy Kid The Third Wheel by Jeff Kinney, and I started the new book in the Dork Diaries series: Tales from a not-so-smart Miss know-It-All by Rachel Renee Russell. As you can probably tell, Diary of a Wimpy Kid and The Dork Diaries series are very much alike. Well, they are. Except, instead of telling the story from a boy's point of view, Dork Diaries is telling the story from a girl's point of view. I really liked the book The Third Wheel, and apparently, so did my sister. She kept stealing the book from my room. I brought home an audio book over the break, but never got the chance to listen to it because I was busy reading my other books.
Wow! That seems like a lot of books, except some I think are more of like comics, so they wouldn't take that long to read. I've never attempted to read, "Diary of a Wimpy Kid" and "The Dork Diaries," because I don't really find an interest in modern books.
DeleteHelen Keller is a very amazing and remarkable story. I think it is incredible that Ann Sullivan was able to teach Helen Keller how to communicate when she was blinded and deaf! I have seen the movie and I also have a picture of both Ann and Helen in a picture we cut out from a newspaper article.
-Maria Hessburg
The diary wimpy kid books are so funny. I read them all.
DeleteI read two books over Christmas break. I needed to fulfill my Mystery column, so I decided that was the genre I would read. I have always enjoyed Carolyn Keene's series, "Nancy Drew" and I knew this was the perfect choice for me. I checked out two books of the series and read them before I expected. Not only did I read them fast, but they were very interesting and exciting too.
ReplyDeleteFor Christmas I got, "The Amulet" by E. Nesbit. It was the sequel to the older book, "Five Children and It." In the first book, there are five children the meet a "sand-fairy" that can grant people wishes, but when the wishes don't turn out how the children want them to, they wind up in trouble! At the end of the book one of the children wishes that they would see the "sand-fairy" again. That is the sequel.
-Maria Hessburg
Maria, I like Nancy drew too although I have already filled my mystery collum I still might read those. Five Children and it sounds good maybe i'll it and then I can read The Amulet i'm sure it's really good.
Delete-Lauren K.
Over break I read 33 Minutes... Until Morgan Sturtz Kicks My Butt. I liked this book because the entire book took place in 33 minutes-that's a cool idea!-(to spread 33 mintues into 210 pages).
ReplyDeleteI also read Top Ten of Everything 2013. I got the book for Christmas. It has a lot of cool facts. My family and I had a lot of fun quizzing each other. Quiz.. Do you know the top 10 most valuable sports teams of 2013?
Or the top 10 most valuable global brands? Maybe Mrs. Shaum would know the top 10 most borrowed fiction titles in the USA. (Number 10 is John Sandford's Rough Country).

DeleteOver break I read some of Hero by Mike Lupica. So far it has been a great book and I can't wait to finish it. I thought that it was sad when Zach's father died in the plane crash. I also read some of Peter Nimble and His Fantastic Eyes. I didn't read as much of it as I had planned. But at least I kind of read over break and I tried.
ReplyDeleteI've read lots of Mike Lupica books. I liked Miracle on 49th Street Mike Lupica is one of my favorite authors.
DeleteAndrew F.
Jimmy Rauh wrote about Hero and Peter Nimble
ReplyDeletejimmy i think that heroe sounds really good and i think im going to read it now. peter nimble was a really good book too and i think you should finish it
DeleteChristian Egan-
ReplyDeleteOver Christmas vacation, I finished the book The Truth about Chuck Norris, 400 Facts about the World's Greatest Human by Ian Spector. Like you may have guessed, this book is an informational text. This book was very interesting and funny.
However, this book isn't for everybody.
I also read The Geeks Guide to World Domination by Garth Sundem. This book is full of random information such as Six Steps to College acceptance, The Classic Ponzi Scheme, and Quotes from the World's top Dictators. I think this book is just as great as the Chuck Norris book, however it is also "not for everybody".
Over break I think I read for fun rather than serious reading. But that's why it's called "vacation".
During Christmas break, I read this interesting book series called “The Creature from my Closet” by Obert Skye. The first book, “Wonkenstein” is about a boy named Rob who hates books and stuffs them all in his crammed closet. But then one day, a mysterious creature comes from the closet who is half Willy Wonka and half Frankenstein. Rob must do all it takes to keep Wonk a secret and only Rob and his best friend Trevor know about Wonk. Join Rob and Wonk on a magical adventure with lots of action, fun, and laughs.
ReplyDeleteI also read the sequel, “Potterwookie”. After Wonkenstein left Rob, another creature came through Rob’s closet, this one half Harry Potter and half Chewbacca from Star Wars. Rob discovers this one has a magic wand used for important emergencies. But Rob has a lot of problems. His bike has been stolen by Wilt, a big fat bully, and Rob is taking part in a cooking contest. Can a little magic stop Rob’s worrying?
Thank you Jacob for mentioning your books that you read. I’m interested in reading Zoobreak by Gordon Korman, but I have not read the first book Swindle. Maybe I should start reading Swindle because it is about someone stealing a rare Babe Ruth baseball card and I love baseball. I wonder why there is a dog on the cover? I think I’m hooked in on a cool new series.
Christian Dean
I'll look up Potterwookie on my kindle. StevieM101
DeleteThe books I read over the summer was baby siter club i read that for fun , then I read reed Gunter that was really good book I think people should read this book, and now the book aim reading is the odd squad that is a really weird book there are three kids that go to school but they aren't. ReplyDeleteOver the holiday break, I finished reading "Between Shades of Gray" and "Lincolns Last Days". I am a big fan of history, so these books were hard to put down. I am also halfway through with "The Doll In The Garden".
ReplyDelete"Between Shades Of Gray" is a very good historical fiction book. I totally recommend it to anyone who has a historical fiction slot open. "Lincolns Last Days" Lost me at some parts, but i realized the real details of President Lincolns life before and after he was assassinated.
Nicole, "Where The Mountain Meets The Moon" sounds very interesting. I will be sure to read it!
- Katherine G.
KAtherine, That sounds like a good book. (between shades of gray) I could put that down as my HIstorical Fiction book =)Thank you for showing interest in my book WHERE THE MOUNTAIN MEETS THE MOON=)

over break i read peter nimble and his fantastic eyes but i didnt finish it. so far a really good book and i think most people in our grade would like it. i also read the very beginning of harry houdini but then i abandoned it but now im reading it again.
ReplyDeletePeter nimble sounds interesting. I will put it on my list.

Deleteheyy victor. I really want to read Peter Nimble cause it sounds really good from what the author said about it in his book talk.
DeleteWow
DeleteOver break i read a lot of books.I started alot of new series. Most where really good but I didnt like the endings. But my favorite book i read was elemental. It was amazing.
ReplyDeleteI also finished the second book in the Pendragon series. I also rapped up some old series I had started.

DeleteHey Will, need to read Pendragon. R they good? and isn't it "wrapped"? StevieM101
DeleteI read Peak by Roland Smith. It is about a kid who climbs Mount Everest. It is a great story and adventure. It is one of my favorite books I've ever read. I would recommend this book to anyone that likes adventure stories. I also read The Brooklyn Nine by Alan Gratz. It is about nine generations of a baseball- loving family. Anyone who likes baseball and wants to learn about the history of the sport would love this book!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Andrew F.

ReplyDeleteLauren k. Over break finished the book Miss Spittfire by Sarah Miller it's historical fiction and about Helen Keller. I also stared the book Helen Keller the Story of my life which is the autobiography by helen Keller I think it is good and I am nearly done with it.

ReplyDeleteOver break i read and finished the book The Mystery On Mackinac island by Anna W.Hale. Its realistic fiction and its about a boy named Hunter and he has to get a job in order to stay at his grandfather's cabin. But Hunter cant get a work permit untill he is 16 so Hunter decides to solve the mystery of the stolen bikes that tourist use when they visit Macinac Island. Hunter meets his partner along the way named Rusty(hunter is Rustys tour guide and the bike mystery is Rustys adventure). So Hunter and Rusty have to find thse stolen bikes before kirby (the trash man) does first.-Shawnita E.
ReplyDeleteDuring the holiday break, I finished the book Wonderstruck and I am almost done with the Doll in the Garden. I love reading these kinds of mystery books because they keep me wanting to read more to find out what happens.
ReplyDeleteWonderstruck was an interesting book because of the illustrations. The stories kept switching off from a boy who was trying to find his dad and a girl who was trying to find her brother and this was a little confusing because there were 2 stories going on at once. The Doll in the Garden is pretty good so far. I recommend it to anyone who likes Mary Downing Hahn books. Katherine, I have always wanted to read Between Shades of Gray. It sounds really great and everyone says it's a good book. I didn't read as much as I had planned to, but I read more than last year's break. - Claire B.
Soon cooooolllll:)))))))
DeleteWonderstruck? sounds familiar...........StevieM101
DeleteOver Christmas break I read Gregor the Overlander and the Prophecy of Bane. It is the second book in the Gregor the Overlander series. The Gregor the Overlander series has five books. I read this book, but I barely read it because i was going to bed at like 11 pm. I did not get any cool reading related gifts for Christmas, in fact i did not get any reading related gifts at all.
ReplyDelete-Max R. 6th grade

Over break, I finished the book Big Nate in a class by himself. I didn't think I liked Big nate books. Now, I want to try and finish the whole series of Big Nate. I also read Diary of a Wimpy kid Rodrick Rules and discovered I like those too. I can see how Big Nate and diary of a Wimpy Kid are similar because they are both set in the same format. both the main characters complain about their lives. Both the books are good too!!
ReplyDelete:) -CJ C I LOVE THE HUNGER GAMES!!!!!
CJ, am getting Big Nate Flips Out on Kindle. Tell me if u want to read it. StevieM101

ReplyDeleteI look forward in reading level 2 and I hope it will be as interesting as Double Identity. I achieved my reading goal to finish that book and start a more challenging one. I also read mostly every night so I could get the book done.

DeleteOver Christmas break I finished The Hero's Guide to Saving Your Kingdom. I thought this book was really good and I definitely recommend this book to all my classmates. I already have a line of people who are going to read this book after me! There are four Princes. Liam, Gustav, Fredric, and Duncan! Duncan is my favorite character all the way. I like him because he is really clueless and has no idea what he is doing. I am going to read the sequel of this book after Mrs. Shaum because she told me about it and it sounds really good!
ReplyDeleteI also started to read When you Reach Me. It is a mystery and I don't really like mystery that much. I hope this book will be the kind of book that wants me to read more and not stop because I want to find out what happens. Mrs. Shaum told me about this book and I assume this will be a good book and i will give this book a shot.
Katherine Gebeck, I really want to read Between Shades of Gray because it seems really interesting and a bunch of people in our class says its really good. It seems really interesting and I love Historical Fiction. Books can take you anywhere in life. In the future, the pass, a train station, and more! That's what I love!

Over Christmas break I read A True Story of a Child in the Holocaust. It was a very sad book, but it was very good. I would recommend this book if you are someone who likes stories of the Holocaust. Honestly I didn't read as much as I would have hoped to read over break. But I think that finishing the book that I started before break is a good accomplishment.
ReplyDeleteAlso, over break I started to read A Series of Unfortunate Events which is very good so far. I chose that book for some at home reading until break was over but, i think I might continue to read it. For Christmas I got two books, The Oddesey and A Family of Poems: My Favorite Poetry for Children. Altough I havn't read any of them yet they seem very good. I hope everyone had a good Christmas and an awesome break! Sam M 6A
HELLO WORLE I LOVE MUSTACHES!!(UNLESS THERE ON SOMEONES FACE)
ReplyDeleteRosie W 6a
ReplyDeleteThat book sounds really good sam. I read a book about the Holocaust over break too. I actually think the book i read is based off of the author of your books, Ruth something ( I can't remember.) My book was called Prisoner B-3087, it was really sad. Its also really intense.
The book I read is about a 13 year old boy who tries to survive the Holocaust.I can't believe how mean some people were back then. It was terrible. I had to put the book down once in a while because it was so sad. Anyway, I think this was a great book ande i recommend it to anyone who doesn' get sad or is grossed out easily because it is a little violent. I hope everyone had a good Christmas! :)
