Let's talk about what we read over break

Welcome back 6th graders!  I hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas and a blessed New Year!  Now that we’re back in school, it’s time to talk about all the great books we read over break.  So here’s what I want you to do:
In the comments section tell us in two concise paragraphs about about your reading experiences over break. Here are some questions to consider:
  • Did you read a really great book you couldn’t put down?  If so,  share with us!
  • Did you struggle with certain books?  Getting reading done at all?
  • Any cool reading-related gifts?
  • Did you try a new reading experience for the first time? (Listening to an audiobook?  Reading an e-book? )
  • How far did you progress in your twenty book goal? (or just how many books did you read in general?)
To make sure this doesn’t just become an assignment that you all come on here to complete without actually reading others’ thoughts, you will also be required to refer to a previous classmate’s post. You can always come back and comment later if you’re one of the first commenters and you don’t have anything to respond to.
This assignment will be worth 30 points.  Twenty points for your two paragraphs and ten points for adding to the discussion by mentioning something from another classmate’s post (and it should be more than just, “Hey _____,   that sounds really cool!”)

What did I read over break? Well I'm glad you asked!

I'm happy to say that my reading experiences over break were very rewarding. First of all, I made it past 100 books for 2011. I read 107 books total for the year so that was very exciting for me. I only finished six novels over break so that was a few away from my ten that I was hoping for, but I'm still plugging along on a few that I started, so all is not lost I suppose. I finished the book Wonderstruck by Brian Selznick and oh my goodness was it a beautiful piece of artistic brilliance! I think I have found our next read aloud!

I didn't really get any books for Christmas because most people know not to buy me books unless I ask for a specific one just because I read so much and people would probably  buy me a book I've already read. Still, I got a few Amazon gift cards so I was able to use those to buy - what else - more books!

Over break I read three books, Heist Society by Ally Carter, Bloody Jack by L.A. Meyer, and Ranger's Apprentice: The Lost Stories by John Flanagan. But the best one that I read was Bloody Jack, which is about Jacky Faber and how she pretended that she was a boy so go on the HMS Dolphin to be a ship's boy.

  3. I had a great time over break. I read Cold Cereal, The Awakening, abd Bridge to Terabithia. My favorite is Bridgeoof T. or Cold Cereal. The Awakening is not bad but its a good book. My 20 books got incresed by 5 because Cold Cereal and The Awakening are over 350pgs. I really had a hard time to understand Cold Cereal sometimes but it was a really good book. I could not stop reading it(not really).I prefer to read it again ut I still have a bunch of books to finish first.

Over break I read two and a half books. One was IT by Stephen King, Page by Paige but I forgot who wrote it and part of Immortal by Gillian Shields but I couldn't finish it. Immortal makes me feel like its a never ending story. Its not that its bad its really confusing I keep having to go back and read over what i last read.

I think my favorite book i read was IT because it was thrilling and scary. I also watched the movie after i read the book and it was practically word for word. The people who played Pennywise the clown and the seven other people sounded exactly like they did in my head.I really liked Page by Paige to. It was odd not reading scary books but I still liked it.

  6. Joe B. I'm reading a poetry book and it was a little confusing. I didnt get as much reading done as I suspected because of sports and family. I did not get any reading devices as gifts. I didnt try any audiobooks or reading devices I just dont really care for them. In general I only read one called newspaper blackouts and it wasnt that bad. I dont think i read enough though because one book in two weeks is not really good. I think break prevented me not to read because school "mostly Literature" keeps me on track. I have to write letters and look out for vocab words so that keeps me on track.

Im started reading over break the twilight book, the first one. I dont really like it so far, its kinda boring. I got a kindle fire. That was my second time reading on the kindel befor.
I have read on my dads kindel befor. I like the kindle fire to read on because instead of marking on how many pages you have read, instead its marks it on how far you are in the book, like I am 24% through the book. The twilight book will be my second book for this quarter.

Over Christmas break I think I read 4 books. I read more books than I thought I would. I got a kindle fire for Christmas so I got a few books on that. I had never read a full book on a kindle or a nook or anything like that so that was cool.
I wanted to read The Hunger Games so I got that on my kindle and it was really good. I wasn't planning on reading that over break but I finished it pretty quickly because I would always be reading it. I was reading a few books at a time and I ended up finishing the book I wanted to finish.Annie M

What I did over break was: get totally obsessed with 1,000 ways to die, finish reading the best book of all time (Across the Universe By: Beth Revis), do my science project, babysit a bunny, and much more! The only books I struggled with was Twilight. It was to long for me to finish the whole book.
I read an e-book on my new NOOK called Brenin. It was the best book ever! It was a very short read, but very interesting and will keep you guessing. I am almost done with my first reading list, and I have started on my second.

    Peace!

I was sick the whole break but i finished some pages anyway. I am finishing "Across The Universe" in suspense, and can't put it down! One of my other choices is "Peak" i am not a very big fan of it but i can manage. Another book i am DYING to read right now is, "New Moon". I finished "Twilight" a while ago and i am zooming through the sequel.
My favorite book of these three is New Moon , I love the Way Stephanie writes , it lures me in so quickly , in every chapter, every inspiring word she notes. I'd love it if she would write more books, maybe not Twilight books, but more.
Across the Universe is a very wonderful book! I love the way the author writes. I am searching for more books by Beth Revis and hope to find them. Beth Revis Writes with such detail that at the beginning of Across the Universe i gagged and felt dizzy. I hope to read Across the Universe soon to finish it.
Peak is not the best book but i don't want to abandon it.I haven't abandoned a book in a very long time so i don't want to break my streak! Peak is a nice book, but not my favorite. Peak is short so i will finish it very soon and hopefully i will be lured in.

I got some books for Christmas. I got the hole Harry Potter series that I have not read. And I also got some other books. I am so so so excited to read them.

    Dear Annabel,
The books you read sound goo and they also sound like a fantasy and mystery are they. Also how many books are there in the Ranger Apprentice Series?

    ReplyDelete
  17. Annabel R.

    Micaela,
I read The Dark Hills Divide too! It was REALLY good! I also read Fly By Night, but I abandoned it because I needed to read more books that I could count for the reading requirement.

    (For my first comment)
I tried to read Frankenstein because I read This Dark Endeavor, which is a prequel to Frankenstein. I'm still trying to read Frankenstein, but it's sort of hard to read because the author uses older English and different words than what we're used to. It's good though...so far.
I read The Lost Stories on iBooks, it was sort of different than reading from a paper book becasue you don't smell the smell of books, but I like reading e-books. Usually I get a LOT of books for Christmas, but I didn't get any this year.

I read alot of books over break, but none that I can put on my list. Some of my favorite books were: The Legend of Holly Claus, Ranger's Apprentice, and a Warriors book that just came out in November.

I haven't had any trouble with any books, and I didn't get any book related gifts. I didn't try out any new things. I read a lot of smaller books, too. Also I reread a lot of books.

  20. Over christmas break I couldn't stop reading THE HUNGER GAMES. I also started to read Shel Stelvertine's EVERYTHING ON IT. Poetry is easy to read and a great way to pass time.

I got gift cards for ibooks to put on my ipad. I could of read more over break. I didn't finsh any books over break.

I do what Ella does. I read the book, and then watch the movie. But I dont do that for all of my books. Sometimes if I watch a movie, and it was really good, I would find the book and read it. I did that with Hugo.

Over Christmas break I read three different books. The Hunger games, Under a war torn sky, and Cabin Fever.

My favorite book was probably the Hunger games because through out the whole book it kept me interested. I read the whole book in one day. I also got Cabin Fever as a present.

Hey Noah, I also read the Hunger Games and I loved it!!! My favorite part was when they first started battling in the arena. I am going to read the second book soon.

I had a great time over Christmas break. I read Chomp which was a very good book. It was the first book I read from Carl Hiaasen. The book was a realistic fiction and it was very entertaining.
I wish I could of read more but I was with family skiing almost the whole day and I had sports. For Christmas I got an I-Pod Touch. You can get books on an app called E-Books. I loved my break and had a really fun time. I also finished 12 books. I need to read nonfiction books and historical fiction books.

Over break i read 7 books. I also got an ipad2 so i bought i-books and i have read 2 books on that. i read 2 hardy boys books from the library. and i also read eager.

i really think that e-books are great and i really liked them, some of the e-books that i read were the black cauldron and the book of three. those were 2 books i could not put down.

I only read one book over break and that was Things Not Seen. The book was really good but I finshed it earlier in the break becasue I was almost done with it. The reson why I didn't finish another book is I went Up North for 5 days and I didnt' have much time to read in the day and the book that I am reading is over 350 pages.

I think it is interesting how lots of people got a kindle or a nook. Though I think reading from those are to distracting. But they are cool!

I read two books and a half books over break. I read "Flush" and "Black Beauty", and I loved them both. A really great book I couldn't put down was "Flush". It was really informative about the environment, but it was cute at the same time. The other book I read, "Black Beauty" wasn't as light-hearted. Although, despite the gloomy attitude, it was a pretty good book after all.
The best reading related gift I got was a Nook Color. I've only bought two books on it and one of them I didn't even know I bought, but it was a pretty good gift anyway. I didn't have much of a problem reading over break because I always seem to find a good time to read. I also did some scattered reading and finished my two books that way. But, sometimes when I use that method of reading, I don't get anything done. So, it's a good and bad thing at the same time.

Hi Mrs. Shaum! I read a whole bunch over break because I had oodles of free time. But that counts out going to Islamorada last week. I read a majority of my reading there, which included The Invention of Hugo Cabret by Brian Selznick. I also read most of The Green Glass Sea by Ellen Klages, but sadly didn't finish it. It's a pretty good book.

I also listened to the audiobook of The True Meaning of Smekday by Adam Rex. Bahni Turpin could not have made it any better, thanks to her amazing J. Lo voice. My favorite part was when J. Lo was drinking the water out of the car battery, saying, "It is good! Tangy!" I WAS drinking water there, but it didn't make it to my stomach without making me try to perform the Heimlich Maneuver on myself, followed by some slapping on my back, courtesy of my brother.

I think even though Hugo Cabret was some 500 pages, it wouldn't count as two books, because 2/3 of the pages were bi-page pictures.

Sadly over break I did not read as much as I should have. Things like skiing and hockey had limited me from reading because I had so much fun doing other things such as thoughs. But I did get to read a small amount of The Journal of Sean Sullivan.

For christmas I had gotten a stunning kindle fire! It is one of the best presents I have ever gotten and I cant wait to start using it.This quarter I have read three books(about to finish fourth). I know that I am probably not going to read over twenty books. But I am going to read twenty books by the end of the year. Even though I struggled over break I will try harder to read during the school year.

I didn't get a Kindle or something like that for Christmas. But yesterday I found out that I can get books on my phone and use it as a Kindle. I want to read Things Not Seen now. I have heard that it's a good book.

I read the Dog Of Knots. The Dog of Knots is such a good book . The book is about this girl named Mayim facing the fear of war and seeking wisdom on what to do from her mom and her aunt.

But she also gets help from Knotty. Knotty is this ancient dog who looks a whole lot like her father. Mayim's father died during the six day war before this war. So does the father really come back as a dog who lives in the wadi. The wadi is where all the water from the mountains go.your a goner.

But the way down to the wadi is very hard to get to. It's so bumpy and rocky down there that if you slip

I read a lot, and when I say a lot, mean a lot, of books over Christmas Break. I got 2 books from the Escape from Furnace series, and I loved them so much that I couldn't put them down. I finished Solitary, the second book in the series, the day I got it. I finished Death Sentence, the third book, the second day. I also read some more of The Scorch Trials, which I am almost done with. I plan on reading the last book in The Maze Runner Trilogy, Death Cure. I also read a book that's called I Hate Rules, and it was OK.

I did not struggle with any books over break, mostly because they were books that the words in them I already knew. I don't know exactly where I am in the 20 book department, but I am, I'd say, done or almost done. I think I need some mystery and a little bit of nonfiction. But yeah, I'm almost done. I got the Escape from Furnace books for Christmas, but no Kindle or Nook or iPad. That's most likely because I didn't ask for one. But that's OK, because I like reading the actual book, as in turning real pages. Either way, reading is AWESOME!

  39. Micaela, I got an E-Reader too! But, instead of a Kindle, I got a Nook. I like Nooks and Kindles because they are easier to read on to me. Sometimes, the text in books are too small, but on a Nook it's always the same size and font.

Over break I read 2 books. The first book I read was "Even More Letters from A Nut". I was suckedinto this book because the authour is just so hilarious. The book is by: Ted L. Nancy. The second book i read was "I've Lost My Hippopatumus". The book is by:Jack Prelutsky.
The book is all poems and I love poetry. The book is very funny you will laugh.
Over break i am very busy but on my way to Colorado I got time to and on my way back from Colorado. My family drives out to Colorado and every year that is when I get my reading done.I have finished all of the books i need to read this quarter. I have read 8 books this quarter and that is really good for me but some were just easy books. I didn't use the easy books for finishing my 5 books per quarter. I didn't get anything really related to reading for christmas.

I read Cabin fever over Christmas break. It was funny and a very easy read. I like his books because they are easy reads and they are funny. After i had finished cabin fever I started reading The Swiss Family Robinson. So far it is good and I enjoy it. I am currently on the second list and since I got stocked up on books that I got for Christmas I am not worried about the five books per quarter thing. In response to Noahs post, I think the first hunger games book is amazing, I also couldn't put it down. It seems alot of people have read the rangers apprentice books over break I would suggest it to you. They are really good adventure books.

If I have to rate these books I would rate Hugo a 9,13 gifts a 7 and no more Dead Dogs a 8.Like Mary I went to see Hugo before reading the book.13 gifts was not as good as the 1st book. But No More Dead Dogs was really good.

Over break my plans changed from going to Florida to going Up North instead. Therefore I didn't get as much time to read as much at all.I'm extremely disappointed in what I read over break which was nearly nothing.I have not been very successful when it comes to reading and writing and I know that now as we are nearing the end of the quarter I'm behind.

I was very fortunate to receive an iPad 2 for Christmas and you can read on it. I haven't downloaded any books on to it yet but I plan to.I hope it in a way motivates me to read more and exceed beyond the requirements.I hope that I am able to catch up on some letters considering I only have 1 or 2.

That sounds cool and what books would you really want to read so much you can not stand it? Also what I really want to ask you is that what kind of authors do you prefer to read?

I would really want to read Chomp when you get the time can you tell me how the book was? Also what kind of genres you like.

i read 1and a half books because i started cabin fever but i haven't finished it yet and i red the 4 diary of a wimpy kid dog days and it was a really good book.My favorite part of dog days was when he look in the news paper and it said a game at an arcade place and there really wasn't a tournament so the guy let Greg and Rowley have a tournament by them selves at the game Greg had the high score in.So Rowley beat him in the game because Greg wanted to be funny and act like the muddy hand so Rowley hit him in the hand with something so his thumb was all red and he couldn't play.the book was so good and really funny.I'm not that far in cabin fever.i had a really good Christmas because i got the kinect its so much fun. the games i got for the kinect are just dance 3 and this sports game

Annabel, I agree with you about reading e-books. I've never actually read them, but I know I won't like not being able to hold a actual book. Is the e-book you read the last Ranger's Apprentice book?

Over break I read two books. The first book I read was True Escape Stories, the book was about how criminals (or captured solders) escaped from their prison or camp. If I were to rate this book I would give it 3 1/2 stars.
The second book I got for Christmas. The books name was Cabin fever, this book was about Greg Heffly's trouble during the holidays. If I were to rate this book I would give it 4 1/2 stars.

P.S. This was a very very shortcut version of my first two times writing this, both times they got erased because of a glitch on the Netbooks.

I read half of a book called the True meaning of Smeckday. It is getting better but at first the book was really boring. I think I could have read more books but I was really busy. Its not that the book was hard or anything to tell you the truth the book was kind of easy I just didnt have time. If I were to read another book over the break It would have been The Mysterious Benidict Society. Ive heard it was really good. Speaking of books I got 2 books over Christmas Wonder Struck and a greek book. I really want to read Wonder Struck my teacher read it and she said that it was a great book. I cant wait to read it!!!!

Over break I read one book, The City of Ember. I read the ebook version on my nook that I got for Christmas. I started reading Letters from a Nut Extra Nutty but it is hard to get into because all of the boring letters are the ones that are a lot of pages.

I also started reading The People of Sparks the sequal to the City of Ember. The are really cool because the second book starts right where the first book ended. so I feel like Im reading the same book.

    Gabby

I agree when i started reading The True Meaning of Smekday it was really boring. But it just gets better.

Over break I only read 1 book. It was called " Robbie Packford Alien monster". It was science fiction and turned out to be not my favorite.

I didn't really like the plot because it seemed unusual. But the main character saved the world and thats all that matters. I would not recommend this book.

Craig, your book sounds interesting we could talk about the book and the details soon.

I also read Diary of A Wimpy Kid #3. It was a really easy book. And it was good. I thought that was the best one out of the series.

Over break I read 6 books. I read Memoirs of a Teenage Amnesiac,Don't Look Behind You, Room One, 11 Birthdays,The Legend Of Sleepy Hollow and RIP Van Winkle, and Peaches. I liked Memoirs OF a Teenage Amnesiac best of all.Memoirs of a Teenage Amnesiac is not really good at the beginning but then it gets a ton better as you keep reading.

I also read 11 Birthdays and liked it a lot. I was really glad when Sarah did her book talk on it because it made me want to read it more.

Over break I read 1 book. I read Hothead it was a really good book I think my mom got a perfect book for me. The book sounded like me because the character goes threw struggles like me so I thought it was great. I did not struggle with this book, but it was a little of a challenge but this was the only reading I got done with over break. I wish I could've got more reading done though.

I tried to finsh my book earlier so I could read this other book it's by Rick Riordan but I can read it another time. I did not get any kind of e-reader but I got some regular book's that are great. I did not try anything new like an audio book something like that but I wush I could've. I'm really close to my 20 book goal I will keep reading until I get to that goal.

Over break I read two books, Grounded and Every soul a star. I loved them both so much. Grounded is by Kate Klise. Every soul a star is by Wendy Moss. Grounded is probably a little to easy for me but had a lot of vocabulary. I would recommend these books to any one.

Also I got a nook color for Christmas. I love it though it spazzes out a lot. I hear it does that for everyone. Melinda I read 11 birthdays last year it rocked. It was so good. I wished I could of read more over break but sadly I didn't.
